| Till
two years ago Mishri Mali was
very happy with her husband, son, daughter-in-law
and two granddaughters in a small house in Thecho
village, which is just five kilometres away
from the Kathmandu ring road.Her husband and
son earned the money and did everything for
her family;she was not worried about anything
until last year when her husband died of cancer.Her
son disappeared and her daughter-in-law passed
away. Her seven and five year-old daughters
were left with no one to support them leaving.
Mali
began experiencing problems and was frustrated
about everything. She felt helpless and hopeless.
There was no food to eat, no money with which
to raise those two girls and no hope for them
to ever go to school. She felt stuck and felt
that there was no way that she would ever be
able to overcome her problems and sorrows. Occasionally,
her neighbours would offer some support but
most of the time she was left to fend for herself
and her two small granddaughters.
One
day a man from New Zealand, who has been working
in Korea, contacted the VSN office showing great
interest in funding support for an orphaned
child’s education. VSN immediately sent
the details of the two girls that needed such
help and were in a really difficult situation.
Mark Soper was that man, and he is
kind enough to support not only the girls' education
but he also wants to offer support for food
assistance for the family. Mr. Mark is supporting
half of their total expenses
as VSN does not want them to be totally dependant
on outside support. Now that Mark has been helping
to support the family, both girls go to an English
boarding school near their house and are getting
a good education that will help them to one
day be able to support themselves and their
grandmother. They have food to eat and the whole
family is much happier now.
Mali feels that Mr. Mark is a really great and
generous man. She is appreciative that he has
been supporting her granddaughters and helping
to make their futures bright and hopeful. Her
granddaughters mean everything to her and seeing
them prosper adds so much optimism to her life
and excitement to their future. The girls are
really fortunate to have been sponsored and
it is helping them to become self-reliant and
respectable women.
